Weight loss surgery in India - how to choose between Gastric Sleeve and Gastric Banding

Choose between Gastric Sleeve and Gastric Banding

There are many variations of weight loss surgery that sometimes make us wonder as to which weight loss surgery is right for me? Recent Studies have shown a 10% drop in gastric band procedures as it has been found to be less effective in the long run. Sleeve gastrectomy on the other hand is gaining more popularity as it is safer and more effective in reducing weight as compared with gastric banding or gastric bypass. However, the flip side of opting sleeve gastrectomy is that it is an irreversible procedure whereas gastric banding is both adjustable and reversible.

Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy Vs laparoscopic gastric banding – A comparison

Variable
1. Mechanism of Action

Lap Sleeve Gastrectomy - A lap gastric sleeve surgery or vertical sleeve gastrectomy works by removing a large part of stomach along with a hunger producing hormone, called ghrelin. This leaves the reduced part of stomach as a tube or sleeve that stores the food.

With reduction in the size of the stomach, there is less food that the stomach can hold. Also, since the hormone ghrelin, which alerts that body needs food, once removed, makes the stomach feel fuller soon and makes you eat less. The two way mechanism thus helps in reducing weight up to 60 – 80% in a couple of years.
Lap gastric band surgery entails placing a band or a silicone device at the top portion of the stomach which restricts the capacity of stomach to hold food.

With reduced capacity of stomach, you would feel fuller soon and this results in consistent weight loss. With lap gastric banding you can expect to reduce about 50% of the excess weight within the first year of surgery. Since the band placed is adjustable and reversible, the doctor would be able to regulate the rate of weight loss as per the patient’s requirements.

2. Time Involved and Hospital stay
The time taken to complete gastric sleeve surgery is longer than the time required in conducting Lap Gastric Banding

The average hospital stay is of two – three days
The time consumed for carrying out lap gastric banding is relatively shorter than the time consumed in conducting gastric sleeve surgery.

With gastric banding, you may be discharged the next day of the surgery.
3.Reversibility
It is a non-reversible surgery
It is a reversible weight loss procedure
4. Post operative Care
The recovery is relatively slower with gastric sleeve surgery as there occurs swelling and discomfort for weeks.
The recovery is fairly sooner in gastric banding as compared with gastric sleeve surgery
5. After the Surgery
There is lesser tendency to consume liquids post gastric sleeve surgery.

There is higher weight loss with sleeve gastrectomy as compared with lap band surgery
Lap band patient can consume more liquids than sleeve gastrectomy patients

With lap gastric banding there is lesser weight loss than gastric sleeve surgery

In a recent study by American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, it was found that with gastric sleeve surgery there was a 30 % drop in the body mass index after one year whereas with gastric band surgery was 20%.This has made sleeve gastrectomy a more popular procedure than gastric banding.

Looking at the pros and cons of undergoing the two surgeries, surgeon’s opinion and your choice of surgery, you may now be able to decide which weight loss surgery is right for you.
