Lines of Loosening of skin

Prolonged exposure to sun, pollution and factors like smoking, genetics make the signs of ageing on your face look more prominent. Loosening of skin, wrinkles, furrows, weakening of the muscles of the neck, jowls and forehead are few signs which not only are more marked but also appear quite early because of these  factors.

Facelift is one procedure that efficiently turns the clock back on face by 10 – 15 years. Not very long ago, facelift was considered only for rich and famous. Today it has become one of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgery procedures among people from all walks of life.

How does a facelift take the years off your face?

Technically known as Rhytidectomy, a facelift surgery helps in removing signs of aging by:

·         Tightening the skin of face and neck
·         Treating problem areas in lower facial regions such as jowls and neck
·         Removing lines around eyes, nose and mouth, removing loose skin around neck, jaws around the cheek area.
·         Rejuvenating both face and neck together if combined with blepharoplasty, neck lift surgery and brow lift.
·         Removing excess fat from neck and double chin.

A  facelift surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia and takes about three to four hours. The surgery is performed by making an incision at the temples above the hairline and then extending in front of ears and behind the natural crease of ear lobe. The incision is done as inconspicuously as possible to hide under the hair. After the incision, the underlying tissue and muscles are separated, fat is trimmed or removed and the underlying muscles are tightened. The deep muscles are also tightened and excess skin is pulled up, trimmed and stitched back.

There are some variations of facelift:

·         Mini facelift – Also known as Upper or temporal lift, a mini facelift refreshes the look and is performed as a single procedure in young people who do not wish to have cheek rejuvenation.
·         Mid – lift – The mid-lift is done to correct the cheeks

How long does a facelift last?

A facelift doesn’t stop the process of aging rather it resets the clock back to an earlier time. The main factor that determines the longevity of facelift is the elasticity of the skin. The skin that has lost elasticity due to aging, sun damage, smoking or weight fluctuation tends to recoil back to pre-operative state. However, the skin which is younger and more elastic maintains longevity of facelift. Thus the results of facelift will be more assuring and may last for more number of years if done at the age of 40s rather than if the procedure is done at 60s.
