Computer Navigation in knee replacement
Computer navigation allows the surgeon to place the implant very accurately and even check and adjust the implant positioning each step along the way while performing the surgery. The surgeon can finely adjust the position of the implant for the proper functioning of implant. The surgeon is, however, always in control of the surgery and uses computer to provide information only on where to place the new knee.
Accurate implant placement is one of the most important factors for a successful knee replacement and the longevity of the implant. Even small misalignment may result in loosening, wear and tear of implant and poor functioning of the new system.
There is however disadvantages of using computer navigation system that it makes the surgery longer and costlier as additional expensive equipments are needed to perform the surgery.

This is one of the most recent advancement in the technology used for knee replacement. Patient matched instrument or patient specific surgical instruments are customised instruments which are specifically made for a particular patient for exact alignment of patient’s knee which increases implant longevity to a great extent.
This is done by using the X-ray and MRI images of the patient’s knee using a specialized software which generates virtual images of the knee. Surgical instruments and the guides are then made specifically for a patient as per his/ her size and shape of the knee based on these images and it takes about 6 weeks to get the instruments ready.
This technology has various advantages. It shortens various steps otherwise required in the traditional surgery and thus shortens the surgery time, since most of the planning for size implant placement has been done pre-operatively by computer. Short surgery reduces blood loss to a great extent, reduces the risk of infection, less damage to muscle and thus resulting in quick recovery and shorter hospital stay.
The exact matched instruments allow precise alignment of the knee which not only feels more natural but also has longer life, because precise alignment reduces wear and tear of the implant which is one of the important reasons of implant failure.
Highly cross-linked Polyethylene and Ceramic implants
The plastic insert used in the artificial knee has the tendency to wear with time. To overcome this drawback, there is a major technological advancement in the quality of plastic inserts used in the implants- highly cross linked polyethylene and ceramic implants are now available which reduce wear and tear and thus increase the life of implant. Most surgeons prefer to use these implants now especially in young patients.
