Lower Body Lift cosmetic surgery

After shedding all the extra kilos, you are on a great high, but are still concerned about the loose folds of skin hanging around your body.

Lower body lift is the plastic surgery procedure to tighten the loose and sagging skin in buttocks, hips, in front, back, outer and inner thighs. Lower body lift is the most popular plastic surgery procedure to contour these areas. It can also be combined with breast lift; arm lift and tummy tuck to contour all the areas of body with loose skin, which is known as full body lift. Full body lift is usually done in more than one sitting.

Lower body lift is done by making an incision passing from the back, around the hips to the front of the thighs. The loose skin and the underlying fat tissue are removed to allow the suspension of remaining tissues to stretch and smooth the lower body, especially buttocks and thighs.

The incisions are made in the natural folds of the skin such that they are well hidden under the sportswear.  The surgery begins in the back and needs careful re positioning of the skin and underlying tissues to address outer, inner and front thighs.  If a tummy tuck or abdominoplasty has not been done previously, abdominal skin tightening is also done at the same time.

Lower body lift operation offers many advantages, in the sense that many areas of the body are contoured at the same time, tightening also extends lower in the back, side and front of thighs than other circumferential excisional procedures. The operation can be combined with liposuction in selected areas if there are remaining fat cells to give good sculpting.

Candidates for lower body lift surgery:

Lower body lift is usually required by people  after massive weight loss.

  • People with following are candidates for lower body lift surgery:
  • Loose skin in buttocks and hips
  • Loose skin in front, back, inner and outer side of thighs
  • Loose abdominal skin
  • No or very less fat below the skin of these areas

All Candidates for body lift surgery have extra skin which must be removed by excision. However, if there is any extra fat below the skin, that can also be removed with the excision to smooth and contour the areas.

The best candidates for lower body lift are those who have stable weight for a year, do not intend to lose any further weight, understand the procedure, know and accept the thin scar around the waist, physically healthy and mentally and emotionally stable.

Procedure for Lower Body Lift Surgery

Since every patient’s anatomy and extent of loose skin is different, the procedure and technique to perform the lower body lift varies with patient and the surgeon’s comfort. It also depends on your goals and expectations from the procedure.

However, all standard lower body lift techniques tighten the buttocks, hips back and outer thighs first by making the patient lie on his/ her abdomen. The surgeon removes the loose sagging skin below the incision and pulls the remaining skin in the buttock and thighs upwards, repairs the skin and suspends the tissues and tightens them.  Incision closure is done in multiple layers over drains to control stretching and swelling.

For the front side lower body lift, the patient is then made to lie on his back. There are two options, which should be discussed with the surgeon before the surgery.  One is to combine lower body lift with abdominoplasty or tummy tuck and the other is to combine lower body lift with inner thigh lift. This is usually done in case patient does not require contouring of the abdomen or that has been done previously.

Recovery after lower body lift

Though recovery varies from person to person, most people can resume their day to day activities after a week to ten days of the surgery. You would feel pain and discomfort for 3-4 days after the surgery which would be controlled with medications. Surgical drains are put in place to remove fluid accumulation which is usually removed after 3-4 days and you are then allowed to be released from the hospital. The sutures are removed after a week of the procedure.

The surgeon would advise you to sincerely wear a compression garments for at least 6 weeks following surgery to control swelling and support the suspended tissues, and to smooth and flatten the skin.

Important things to consider while going in for a lower body lift surgery

Because the operation tightens the lower body by excising loose tissues- skin and fat, it is advisable to get the procedure done when you have achieved your desired body weight. If you are in the process of losing weight, you should wait till you have lost all the extra kilos and have a stable weight for about six months.

If you lose weight after you have undergone lower body lift operation, your skin would become lose and saggy again spoiling all the efforts you did. On the other side, if you gain excessive weight, the skin which was tightened would stretch and reverse the results.
