Breast Augmentation
It all began with the eventful year of 2006.
Do not worry, we are not getting political and are not referring to the
tug-of-war between George W Bush and Saddam Hussain! We are talking about the
beginning of a new year in the field of plastic surgery especially that of
Breast augmentation surgery.
Turns out our Mathematics teachers were right
after all. Numbers and figures, at times, convey much more information than
mere words. If you look at the
statistical figures, you would notice a sudden increase in the breast
augmentation procedures since 2006. The answer to your predictable ‘why?’ has
to do with silicone implants.
As you would already know, breast implants
used during breast augmentation procedures can be of two types – saline
implants and silicone implants.
Silicone Implants
FDI lifted its ban on Silicon implants in 2006.
Before you freak out thinking that silicone implants would carry substantial
risk which could have led to their ban by FDA in the first place, let us delve
into the details. There were concerns that silicone implants might lead to
health issues. Not that it was true, but due to the lack of studies on the
issue, FDA decided to impose ban on the implants in the year 1992 until studies
confirmed otherwise. After 14 years of rigorous scientific studies, FDA ultimately
declared the devices ‘safe and effective’.

Why prefer silicone over saline
Why are silicone implants preferred over
saline ones? Ask women who have been through breast augmentation and they reply
in unison, “Because they make our breasts look natural”. Unlike water used in
saline implants, silicone is compressible and soft just like breast tissues.
The success of any product depends on how its use makes the consumers feel
better about themselves. Silicone breast implants feel better and also last
longer, making them favorite among the ladies. From occupying a mere 19 % of
the total breast augmentation procedures, silicone implants grew upto 72% of
the total 330,631 breast augmentation procedures in the year 2012. We told you,
numbers speak for themselves. Do we need to say further about their popularity?
Back to
year 2012 and 2013
Since year 2012,
breast augmentation has occupied the top slot among the most popular cosmetic
surgery procedure. The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery(ASAPS)
attributes this to the increasing popularity of silicone implants since their
reintroduction to the market in 2006. You can avail further details from the 16th
annual multi-specialty procedural statistics of ASAPS released in the year
2013.
While breast
augmentation continues to chart among the most sought after plastic surgeries
among women in the world, many of them are looking for more economic choices
for the same. Precisely what medical tourism to India offers! Breast implants
cost one-third of their prices in developed nations like USA and UK. No wonder
breast augmentation procedures performed under the dexterous supervision of
India’s best cosmetic surgeons are in such a huge demand.
