Liposuction in India- Is it still popular among Medical Tourists?

Liposuction in India

Well, one of the most popular procedures among Westerners, Liposuction sculpts the body by removing stubborn fat deposits from a particular area.

With the availability of modern technology, Liposuction can be done on almost any part of the body- face, chin, neck, breasts, bra strap rolls, back, abdomen (popularly known as stomach liposuction), love handles, thighs, buttocks, hips, calves etc.

Liposuction at a Quick Glance

Relatively much less invasive, liposuction offers quick recovery and a swift return to your work. You need to wear a compression garment for about six to eight weeks after the procedure to help the skin shrink, but you are all set to flaunt your new curves and improved body after that.

Now, comes the question, do medical tourists still choose to travel to get their Liposuction in India?

Well, the answer is a BIG YES!

Liposuction in India is still a very popular procedure among medical tourists and one of the most important reasons for this is Liposuction cost in India. The cost of liposuction in India is a fraction of what it costs to get the same procedure done in the West. For example, while the cost of stomach liposuction in India starts from as low as US $ 1600, whereas it costs around US $ 4000 or more to get liposuction of tummy done in the US.

And if you wish to get liposuction done on multiple areas of the body, or combine it with other procedures such as breast reduction or tummy tuck etc; the incremental savings are large and it thus makes all the more sense for people to choose to get liposuction in India rather than getting it done in their own country.

Besides very affordable cost, there are several other factors that make India a preferred destination for Liposuction, which include:

·         Highly qualified and experienced Surgeons
·         JCI and NABH accredited Hospitals
·         No language barrier
·         India is a great tourist destination

Candidates for Liposuction

Any individual who has an ideal or near ideal body weight and wishes to get rid of localized deposits of fat is a suitable candidate for Liposuction. You should be more than 18 years of age and should be physically and mentally fit to undergo Liposuction.

It is important to remember that Liposuction is not a tool for weight loss, it is a technique for body contouring.

Liposuction- The Procedure

Liposuction can be performed under local or general anesthesia, depending upon the surgeon’s and the patient’s preference and the number of areas to be treated, the procedure takes anywhere between 45 min to 3 hours.
Here are the simple steps to explain how the procedure is performed:
  • The patient and the surgeon agree on which area(s) will be treated and both discuss the expected outcome and end result.
  • The to-be operated areas are marked on the body while the patient is in a standing position
  • Pictures are taken of the area to be operated, this is for both the surgeon and the patient.
  • In the surgery room, a sterilizing solution, such as Betadine, is applied to the selected areas
  • Either general anesthesia is given or local anesthetic is injected and the candidate is given a sedative, either orally or through an Intravenous (IV) injection
  • Incisions are very small, about a quarter to a third of an inch through which suction tubes called cannula are inserted. These cannulae are connected to the suction pump that sucks the fat from the body.
  • The candidate is given an IV fluid line, since some fluid is also lost with the fat, and the fluid balance is to be kept intact.
  • Monitoring devices are attached to the body for a couple of hours after the procedure to keep a track of the blood pressure, heart rate, and blood oxygen level.
  • Usually, the candidate can get up, walk around, and go home the same day of the operation or the next day, depending on the extent of surgery performed

Recovery after Liposuction

Recovery is fairly quick and downtime quite less after the liposuction. You would be up and about the same day of the procedure and can resume your daily activities in a week’s time. Heavy work out and weight lifting has to wait for 4-6 weeks. You would also be advised to wear a compression garment to help your skin shrink.

how is liposuction done

Preparation for Liposuction
Though does not affect the results directly, good preparation before the surgery definitely makes the healing easier and recovery uneventful. A balanced diet and some form of exercise for a few weeks before the procedure to maintain good blood circulation is quite helpful.
Before going for liposuction, no anticoagulants should be taken for at least a week or so before the procedure. Smoking is not advised for about two months before the procedure, as nicotine interferes with the blood circulation and wound healing. Bruising and delayed healing is common in people who resume smoking post-surgery.
Arnica and Vitamin E containing medicines should be stopped 2 weeks before the procedure. You should be healthy and have optimum Hemoglobin.
Liposuction Side effects & Complications
A side effect, as opposed to a complication, is medically minor, although it can be uncomfortable, annoying, and even painful.
Here are few of the common side effects of the liposuction:
·         Bruising can be painful in the short term but fades after a few weeks.
·         There is quite some swelling for a couple of days, which minimizes gradually
·         Scars will differ in size depending on the particular procedure and completely fade over the weeks.
·         Pain is temporary and controlled by either over-the-counter medication or by a prescription.
·         Numbness sometimes persists for a few weeks.
·         Limited mobility for a few days will depend on the exact procedure of the surgery.

Complications of Liposuction

Complications following liposuction are rare but can be serious if the procedure is done by an inexperienced surgeon. Few of the possible complications after liposuction are listed below:

·        Your skin might appear bumpy, wavy or withered due to uneven fat removal, poor skin elasticity, and unusual healing.
·        Temporary pockets of fluid (seromas) can form under the skin. This fluid will need to be drained with a needle.
·         Skin infections are rare but possible.
·         Pieces of loosened fat might break away and become trapped in a blood vessel and gather in the lungs or travel to the brain. A fat embolism is a medical emergency.
So, it is very important to be careful when you choose to undergo the procedure. Make sure you discuss your medical details with the surgeon before your procedure and inform him/her about any past complications/ illnesses/ allergies.

The safety of the procedure relates not only to the amount of fat removed but also to the choice of anesthesia and the patient’s health. It is important for the patient to be as healthy as possible before the start of the procedure, and not to smoke for several weeks before and after the surgery. One must understand that liposuction is a serious surgery and should be taken with seriousness.

Full Body Liposuction

It is a myth that all the fat or any amount of fat can be removed from a particular area. It is important to note that there are limits to which fat can be safely removed from the body.
Several factors limit the amount of fat that can be safely removed in one session. This includes the number of areas being treated, hours under anesthesia, technology being used and the skill of the surgeon.
If the surgeon feels that it is medically safe to perform liposuction on multiple areas of the body, only then he/ she will go ahead.
Another very popular myth is that liposuction is a technique for weight loss. Liposuction does not aid in weight loss and is a body contouring procedure.
The basic challenges of liposuction procedure are as follows:
·         To remove the right amount of fat
·         To cause minimum disturbance to neighboring tissues
·         To leave the patient’s fluid balance undisturbed
·         To cause minimum discomfort to the patient
