Knee Replacement in India – My Journey from Broken to Replaced Knees

"I travelled halfway around the world and had both of my legs broke and it was a pleasurable trip. To clarify I needed both knees replaced!

My idea was to operate on both knees at the same time; spend 4-5 days in the hospital, go to a hotel and come back for physical therapy; I was completely wrong!

At the first meeting with the surgery team, I was told they would do the left knee first, then wait a few days and do the right one. I even argued with them! Then I realised that they knew way more than me and they were COMPLETELY right. The left knee was done and I even considered just having injections in my right knee; here again, they were right. That would only be a temporary fix and I would be in the same position that I came in therewith.

Did it hurt? YES! But it was the good kind because I can sense that an ending is in sight. There were a few problems that were handled as opportunities or solutions and were quickly resolved.

Regarding Physical Therapy, the therapist did everything in their power to make sure I was ready for the LONG JOURNEY home. And after being home for a week I can only say they did a FANTASTIC JOB! My therapist in the US was extremely impressed with my movement and ability to walk. Both knees are bending to 128 degrees and I have already started on the stationary bike.

To the nurses, the lovely ladies with smiles that melted the coldest heart: I cannot even begin to say how well I was treated by all of them and how wonderful they were.

House Keeping: What a great group of people! ALWAYS HAPPY AND SMILING! They helped me a lot during both the surgeries and tried teaching me Hindi too!

The people in the operating theatre, they made me feel very comfortable during both surgeries. The Dieticians: when they found out that I liked fruit, they made sure I had plenty.

I will be forever grateful."

Knee Replacement in India

Knee Replacement Surgery in India is a very popular procedure and is the most commonly performed Joint Replacement surgery. The procedure is generally indicated for patients ranging from 50 to 80 years of age with an average age of about 70 years.

The procedure has an excellent outcome with immediate pain relief, improved mobility, better physical activity levels and a much superior overall quality of life after the surgery.  There has also been a significant improvement in the quality of implants, the materials used now have more endurance and are more resistant to wear and tear. About longevity, more than 90% of implants work in excellent condition 10 years after the surgery and around 85% work well even after 20 years.

The surgery is relatively very safe and does not lead to any major complications. Knee Joint Infection, Blood clots, Osteolysis, etc are some of the serious complications possible after the surgery, which occur in less than 1-2% of patients.

What about the cost?

The cost of Knee Replacement surgery in India is one of the major reasons why people opt for Knee surgery abroad in India. The average cost for Unilateral or Single Knee Replacement surgery in the US is around the US $ 50-60,000, which is more than 10 times what it costs in India. Even this is not an all-inclusive price as there are additional expenses of outpatient charges for investigations, physical therapy, follow-up consultations with the surgeon, etc. Adding all these costs makes the surgery completely out of the budget for uninsured people. Even for those who are insured, the deductibles and co-payment themselves make a huge amount.

On the other hand, the total package price for Knee Replacement surgery in India is as less as $ 4500, thus making the surgery in India very affordable. This is so, without any compromise on the quality of implant or surgical technique.
